Our Expertise in Mobility & Transport Acoustics

Close-Proximity Measurement (CPX) – Near-field measurement

The acoustic properties of noise-reducing road surfaces can be recorded over the entire route length in flowing traffic using our CPX measurement systems. The noise is captured directly at the source by using near-field noise measurement trailers. Microphones measure the sound pressure at the tire to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of the road surface.

Your Benefits:

  • High Repeatability: Thanks to standardized test tires and an acoustically optimized enclosure of the measurement system, the acoustic properties of road surfaces can be recorded precisely and consistently.
  • Rapid Response Capability: Müller-BBM operates three fully equipped measurement systems, enabling fast execution of measurements. A backup system is available at any time if needed.
  • Accreditation and Expertise: The Noise and Vibration Testing Laboratory at Müller-BBM is accredited for the CPX measurement method according to ISO 11819-2, ensuring high quality and reliability of the measurements.

Research and development

Müller-BBM is involved in various research and development projects (R&D projects) in transportation technology, including the development and optimization of noise-reducing road surfaces and the acoustic enhancement of pavement structures to reduce noise and improve driving comfort. We develop and deploy suitable measurement methods and devices to capture and assess acoustically relevant road surface properties, and we participate in national and international research projects.

Your Benefits:

  • Network and practical relevance: You benefit from the combination of international networks, decades of experience in acoustic development, strong practical relevance, and innovative measurement systems.
  • Experienced research partner: We are involved in numerous publications and projects, which underscores the quality and reliability of our innovative solutions.
  • Knowledge transfer: Building on these projects, we continue to develop suitable measurement methods and devices that enable the technical capture and evaluation of acoustically relevant road surface properties.

Noise-reducing road surfaces

We offer expert consulting for your innovative solutions to reduce traffic noise through noise-reducing road surfaces. Our specialists analyze the acoustic properties of the pavements, recommend suitable materials and construction methods, and support the implementation of your projects from planning to road approval. This ensures a quieter environment!

Your Benefits:

  • Individual analysis and tailored solutions: We analyze the specific requirements of your project and recommend materials and construction methods that are optimally suited to your needs. This ensures effective traffic noise reduction.
  • Comprehensive project support: From planning to commissioning, we accompany your project in full. Our consulting includes material selection as well as support during implementation and construction supervision—for efficient and professional execution of all measures.
  • Improved quality of life and environmental friendliness: Noise-reducing road surfaces enhance the quality of life in affected areas and create more pleasant driving conditions. At the same time, they contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
  • Better cost-benefit ratio: Using noise-reducing road surfaces that minimize traffic noise at the source can make other noise protection measures unnecessary. This leads to lower overall costs.

In-situ measurements on noise barriers

The acoustic performance of newly constructed noise barriers can be assessed using in-situ measurements based on the Adrienne method. Our approach follows the procedures outlined in DIN EN 1793-5 and DIN EN 1793-6.

We also conduct these tests in accordance with the test manual for acoustic acceptance testing of noise barriers along roads and highways (Technical Planning Manual of ASFINAG). Measurements are carried out on the completed wall and serve to verify sound insulation and sound reflection in the installed state.

Thanks to our many years of experience with acoustic measurements in road environments—including CPX and SPB measurements as well as tests on sound absorption at ISO test tracks and noise barriers—we offer a well-founded and practice-oriented implementation.

Your Benefits:

  • Reliable assessment of acoustic performance in the installed state
  • Standard-compliant testing methodology for secure acceptance and documentation
  • Support with quality assurance and verification for authorities

Air mobility

Noise testing for unmanned aircraft (UA) in compliance with EU Regulation 2019/945 and the EN ISO 3744 standard. In our semi-anechoic chamber, we create optimal conditions for determining the A-weighted sound power level (LWA) of drones, as required by the directive. This ensures precise, repeatable measurements and internationally recognized results.

Beyond testing, our services include:

  • Determination of sound power levels for drones under standardized conditions.
  • Acoustic modeling and simulation to predict noise emissions in real-world environments.
  • Noise impact assessments for urban air mobility concepts, supporting community acceptance and regulatory compliance.
  • Strategic consulting and advisory for city planners, public authorities, and stakeholders to define effective noise policies and integrate air mobility into sustainable urban planning.

With decades of experience in acoustics and environmental noise management, we help clients meet regulatory requirements, reduce noise pollution, and build trust in innovative mobility solutions.

SPB measurement – Statistical Pass-By measurement

Müller-BBM Industry Solutions offers measurements using the Statistical Pass-By (SPB) method.
This allows for the evaluation of the acoustic properties of road surface layers and comparison with reference values.
Quality: Müller-BBM is accredited for measurements according to ISO 11819-1 and consistently provides reliable assessment foundations for your pavement surfaces.

Your Benefits:

  • Evaluation of noise-reducing surface layers: Assess the effectiveness of pavement surfaces in reducing traffic noise.
  • Determination of a reference value for road surface correction DSD according to RLS-19: Establish a correction value for road surface influence in accordance with German traffic noise guidelines.
  • Comparison of traffic noise conditions before and after reconstruction: Analyze the acoustic impact of road modifications by comparing noise levels pre- and post-construction.

surface drone

The surface drone by Müller-BBM is a state-of-the-art, self-driving measurement device for real-time macro- and megatexture analysis of road surfaces according to ISO 13473.
It is ideal for quality assurance during installation and for monitoring existing pavement layers.

Your Benefits:

  • Versatile application: The surface drone can be deployed immediately after the final rolling pass—there is no need to step on the freshly laid surface for measurement. This allows the achieved installation quality to be assessed during the construction process. It also enables texture measurements for monitoring existing pavement layers.
  • Portable and lightweight: Weighing only 4 kg, the surface drone can be stored with all accessories in a transport case, making it suitable for air travel. Its integrated power supply allows operation independent of external infrastructure.
  • Location independence: Remote operation enables measurements at various locations without requiring our physical presence.
  • Precise results: The surface drone delivers highly accurate measurement data to help you optimize the quality and safety of your road surfaces.
