Rail and vehicle acoustics

Competent and efficient support for product development

Rail and vehicle acoustics deals with all noise and vibration issues related to rail systems, automobiles, and work vehicles. This includes evaluating designs, supporting the development of noise reduction measures, troubleshooting, conducting acoustic analyses and tests, or simply providing expert advice.

Our consulting

Solid vibro-acoustic expertise and
many years of experience are our foundation.

Our goal is to support your development work as effectively as possible, to answer your acoustic questions and challenges, and to develop tailored solutions. All work is therefore carried out by employees of Müller-BBM Industry Solutions GmbH, who bring extensive acoustic expertise.

That’s why we don’t stop at collecting measurement data—we also support you in analyzing the data, developing measures, and validating them. We are continuously involved in various projects, which allows us to constantly expand and deepen our experience in all areas of vehicle acoustics. To support the training of your employees, we regularly offer seminars on vehicle acoustics.

Our Expertise in Rail acoustics

Acoustic testing of rail vehicles

Efficient and on-schedule testing is made possible by our experienced team. Solid planning is just as important as the routine execution of individual testing tasks. Thanks to efficient measurement technology and analysis, preliminary results are available immediately after each measurement. We perform the following tests within our accredited scope:

  • Acoustic testing of rail vehicles to verify compliance with TSI Noise, TSI Loc&Pas, TSI PRM, VDV154
  • Exterior noise according to DIN EN ISO 3095
  • Interior noise according to DIN EN ISO 3381, DIN EN ISO 15892
  • Speech intelligibility according to DIN EN IEC 60268-16
  • Audibility of warning horns according to EN ISO 15153
  • Determination of wheel roughness according to DIN EN ISO 15610
  • Force-density measurements
  • Testing of acoustic track properties

Your benefits:

  • You benefit from an experienced team, saving both time and money.
  • We can also advise you in cases of exceedances, as we are actively involved in the development of rail vehicles.

Acoustic testing of rail vehicle components

In our test benches, we determine the sound power or the blocking forces of rail vehicle components. Of course, we also carry out these tests on-site at your location.

Testing of acoustic track properties

The acoustic properties of tracks play a central role in the generation and evaluation of rolling noise. Müller-BBM conducts standardized tests in accordance with DIN EN 15461 (dynamic track properties for pass-by noise measurements) and DIN EN 15610 (rail and wheel roughness).

Your benefits:

  • Reliable verification: Our measurements meet all requirements of relevant standards – ideal for approval procedures and technical documentation.

Design-phase consulting / acoustic management

Careful acoustic management ensures that acoustic targets can be reliably achieved. Developing design solutions tailored to specific requirements enables technically and economically superior outcomes. Our goal is a coherent overall concept that meets not only acoustic requirements but also all other project demands. Müller-BBM supports you throughout every phase of your project: from initial vehicle concepts and development to final approval and certification, we are your expert partner for vibro-acoustic challenges in rail vehicles.

Your benefits:

  • Targeted concept evaluation: Already in the early concept phase, we assess whether the vehicle design meets acoustic requirements – reducing later revision cycles and saving development costs.
  • Component-specific target values: By defining acoustic targets for individual components, we enable systematic and efficient optimization of overall noise performance – both technically and economically.
  • Early problem identification: Critical operating conditions, noise sources, and transmission paths are identified early – allowing for targeted noise reduction measures.

Dynamic stiffness/spring test bench

More information about dynamic stiffness and spring test bench, you can find in “test facilities”.

Noise and vibration protection on railway infrastructure

Müller-BBM Industry Solutions GmbH also specializes in predicting sound and vibration effects along rail transport routes, such as bridges or track superstructures. If excessive vibrations are expected, vibration protection systems like mass-spring systems are implemented. We support you in forecasting the effectiveness of these protective measures and in designing appropriate noise control solutions for rail infrastructure. On this topic, we work closely with our vibration protection team.

Our Expertise in vehicle acoustics

Experimental investigations/modern analysis methods

The measurement concept is key to success. That’s why we always begin by understanding the current situation and reviewing existing results and insights. Based on this, we develop a customized approach to efficiently advance your product development. We use all modern measurement and analysis tools, including:

  • Operational Transfer Path Analysis (OTPA)
  • Panel Contribution Analysis (PCA)
  • Array measurement technology
  • Modal analysis / operational vibration analysis
  • Sound intensity measurement techniques

For experimental investigations, we use multi-channel measurement technology and the PAK® analysis software from our sister company Müller-BBM VibroAkustik Systeme. For structural dynamic tasks, we work closely with our structural dynamics team.

Your benefits:

  • We support you in developing the measurement concept.
  • Access to a wide range of sensors, methods, and tools.
  • Experienced specialists who conduct analyses efficiently.

Psychoacoustics and sound design

The acoustic challenges in automotive acoustics at Müller-BBM Industry Solutions GmbH cover nearly all types of sounds: from the powerful engine noise during acceleration, the hum of adjustment motors, the clicking of control elements, and the vehicle’s signal sounds to rolling and wind noise. We design product-specific sounds that convey the quality of the product and provide the user with necessary functional feedback—such as when activating the turn signal.

Automotive acoustics—referred to in the industry as NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness)—encompasses a wide range of acoustic topics. From psychoacoustics and sound design to the experimental analysis of sound generation and transmission, we offer a broad spectrum of services, including the use of advanced measurement techniques and modern instrumentation.

Testing laboratory

Our testing laboratory enables a wide range of material examinations:

  • Absorption coefficient
  • Flow resistance
  • Damping and coupling loss factor
  • Sound insulation of components using wall and window test benches
  • Free-field measurements in two semi-anechoic chambers
  • Alternatively, measurements with flexible equipment directly at the customer’s site or in vehicles on test tracks

Special Topics and Advanced Areas

Workshops and seminars: Based on our broad acoustic expertise, we are happy to conduct in-house seminars at your location and provide you and your team with the fundamentals of acoustics and vibration technology. We are also glad to do this in the context of a current project. We support you during the execution of measurements and assist you with data interpretation.

Other: We work closely with colleagues from the Road traffic technology department on the following topics:

  • Noise-reducing road surfaces
  • Surface drone
  • Certification of noise measurement tracks

You can find more information under the topic area Road traffic technology.
