Initial situation

Cities and municipalities today face a steadily growing challenge: increasing traffic also leads to increasing noise emissions. Particularly problematic are individual vehicles with excessive noise levels – so‑called high emitters. They result from technical defects, manipulated exhaust systems, aggressive driving maneuvers, or simply poor maintenance.

While average noise levels are already well documented in many cities, short‑term, extreme noise events often remain undetected. Yet these events are especially relevant for residents’ perceived disturbance and health impacts.

Another challenge: traditional measurement methods are labor‑ and time‑consuming, can only be deployed selectively, and rarely deliver legally robust data needed for effective enforcement of noise‑control measures.

Solution

HEDS – High Emitter Detection System was developed to close exactly this gap. The system automatically detects individual noise events, collects vehicle data using AI, and provides results in real time. This enables cities to reduce growing noise pollution in a targeted and effective manner.
