Our Expertise in Meteorology & Climate

Dispersion class time series - AKTerm

An AKTerm (short for Ausbreitungsklassenzeitreihe) contains all meteorological data required for an immission forecast.

Müller-BBM uses automated processes to obtain qualified meteorological data from the German Weather Service as well as from various state authorities. We ensure that the data quality meets the requirements of VDI 3783 Part 21. This guarantees that only verified data are incorporated into an AKTerm and thus into an immission forecast.

Your Benefits:

  • High data quality: As an accredited company, our internal processes ensure consistent quality in selecting precise and reliable meteorological data—essential for sound forecasts and expert reports.
  • Time and cost efficiency: Time-consuming and costly on-site measurements are reduced or avoided, leading to more efficient project execution.
  • Tailored solutions: Our high efficiency in generating AKTerm datasets ensures customized solutions for specific project requirements. We enable environmental projects.

Prognostic wind fields

In highly structured topographic terrain, immission forecasts for air pollutants must meet demanding meteorological requirements. To achieve this, three-dimensional models are used that can accurately calculate wind conditions under the terrain’s specific conditions. Müller-BBM prepares the necessary input data and performs the model calculations. Detailed reports support the planning processes of environmentally relevant projects.

Your Benefits:

  • Minimize risks: With predictive wind fields, clients can better plan their immission projects, identify potential risks early, and optimize efforts during the planning and approval process.
  • Accredited service: Müller-BBM offers predictive wind fields as part of its accredited services in the field of immission forecasting. Our predictive wind fields meet the requirements of VDI 3783 Part 16.
  • Accelerate planning processes: Predictive wind field modeling is complex and requires high expertise. We advise you on whether predictive wind fields are necessary for immission forecasts under the legal approval process, enabling you to make informed decisions early and speed up your planning process.

Climate Risk Assessments

Climate-related hazards such as heatwaves, heavy rainfall, droughts, and storms are increasingly challenging municipalities, businesses, and infrastructure operators. Climate risk assessments in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14091 provide a robust basis for identifying risks at an early stage and developing appropriate adaptation measures.

The assessments focus on the three key elements of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. They examine the climatic impacts a location may face in the future, identify which people, buildings, or infrastructure could be affected, and evaluate how sensitive these assets are to the respective stressors.

By systematically linking these factors, climate-related risks can be transparently assessed, prioritized, and translated into concrete action strategies. This creates a sound decision-making basis for the future-proof and climate-resilient development of sites and projects.

Your Benefits:

  • Climate risk assessments in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14091
  • Evaluation of hazards, exposure, and vulnerability
  • Consideration of current and future climate scenarios
  • Identification of risks, hotspots, and adaptation needs
  • Reliable foundation for adaptation and resilience strategies
  • Suitable for municipalities, businesses, real estate, and infrastructure assets

A structured climate risk assessment makes the potential impacts of climate change visible at an early stage and enables timely planning of appropriate adaptation measures. This increases the resilience of locations and supports sustainable investment and planning decisions.

Urban climate, microclimate

With anthropogenic climate change, weather conditions are shifting. This affects the climate not only in metropolitan areas but also in industrial and commercial zones. Our experts support municipalities, project developers, planners, and companies in the early stages of urban climatological and industrial measures. We analyze the ventilation of neighborhoods, streets, and industrial areas, assess the impact of extreme heat, and develop strategies to improve the climate through green spaces and urban planning measures.

With well-founded reports and detailed models, we help cities, municipalities, industry, and commerce to meet the challenges of climate change and enhance the quality of life in urban areas.

Your Benefits:

  • Many years of expertise: We prepare climate reports based on a wide selection of specialist climate models. We advise you throughout the entire life cycle of your projects, starting with the selection of suitable models, right through to the public event where your projects will be presented to a wide audience.
  • All from one source: Our experts bring a wide range of expertise to your projects: landscape architects, agronomists, chemists and even mathematicians. We contribute our know-how.
  • Funding opportunities: With our well-founded expert reports and detailed models, we support you in securing funding for climate-friendly projects.

Super-Resolution for Urban Climate Simulations

High-Resolution Urban Climate Data with a Fraction of the Computational Effort

Modern urban climate simulations using PALM-4U enable detailed analyses of heat stress, ventilation, and thermal comfort down to the scale of individual streets. However, the high-resolution simulations required for such analyses are extremely computationally intensive and can result in long processing times depending on the study area and project scope.

With a proprietary super-resolution neural network, Müller-BBM Industry Solutions combines the physical accuracy of PALM-4U with the capabilities of modern artificial intelligence. High-resolution urban climate data are generated from relatively coarse-resolution simulations, significantly reducing computational effort and project costs. At the same time, the results remain closely aligned with those of conventional high-resolution simulations.

Your Benefits:

  • Significant reduction in computation times and project costs
  • High-resolution results for urban districts, street canyons, and open spaces
  • Physically sound calculations through the combination of PALM-4U and AI
  • Flexible application for temperature, wind fields, and thermal comfort (PET)
  • Greatly accelerated scenario analyses and planning processes
  • Suitable for climate adaptation strategies, urban development, and open-space planning

By dramatically accelerating the modelling process, the technology makes it economically feasible to address questions that previously required major simplifications or substantial computational resources. At the same time, deviations compared to conventional high-resolution PALM simulations remain low. This opens up new opportunities for the planning and development of climate-resilient cities and urban districts.

Synthetic AKTerm

The TA Luft regulation allows for the replacement of a dispersion class time series (AKTerm) with modeled meteorological data if suitable measurement data is not available.

Müller-BBM offers comprehensive consulting and assessment services, including the creation and evaluation of synthetic AKTerm data, the development of immission concepts, the assessment of emission impacts, and advice on reducing pollutant dispersion.

Your Benefits:

  • Precise modeling: Synthetic AKTerm data enables accurate and reliable dispersion calculations, even in the absence of measurement data.
  • Efficient project execution: synAKT avoids time-consuming and costly on-site measurements, leading to more efficient project workflows.
  • TA-Luft-compliance: With the 2021 revision of TA Luft, synthetic data became permissible for immission forecasts. Müller-BBM monitors and supports legislative processes relevant to air pollution control to ensure your projects are approved quickly and reliably.

Transferability assessment

Transferability assessment is a procedure for determining spatially and temporally representative meteorological data required as input for immission forecasts aimed at air pollution control.

As part of a transferability assessment, Müller-BBM conducts comprehensive evaluations to identify suitable meteorological data for immission forecasts. These evaluations are carried out in accordance with VDI 3783 Part 20. As an accredited company, our transferability assessment ensures the selection of precise and reliable meteorological data, which are essential for sound forecasts and expert reports.

Your Benefits:

  • Cost reduction: Proper testing procedures according to VDI 3783 Part 20 help avoid unnecessary costs caused by inaccurate forecasts.
  • Continuous processes: From transferability assessment to immission forecasting. Our seamless process chain begins with the transferability assessment and delivers expert-level quality with consistently high standards.
  • Time savings: Fast project execution reduces costs and increases efficiency, while compliance with legal requirements ensures smooth and timely approvals, avoiding delays.
