Curve screeching, curve squealing

Curve screeching or curve squealing occurs when rail vehicles travel along tight track curves. This causes the wheels to slip sideways in a jerky manner (the slip-stick effect), which excites the wheels into strong vibrations at their natural frequencies. These vibrations are then radiated as shrill sounds.
