The environment as a safety factor: Why environmental monitoring and risk assessment are becoming increasingly important

The WBGU calls for a multi-dimensional security architecture.

Climate and environmental policy is security policy. Defence is not possible without societal resilience. In a recent assessment of the situation, the WBGU calls for a multidimensional security architecture.

Heatwaves, heavy rainfall events, droughts and the loss of biodiversity do not merely affect the environment – they are having an increasing impact on the security of societies, businesses and critical infrastructure. This is the conclusion reached by the German Federal Government’s Scientific Advisory Council on Global Environmental Change (WBGU) in its latest partial report, ‘The Environment Shapes Security’. According to the report, environmental changes must in the future be regarded as a central component of a modern security strategy.

The WBGU emphasises that the protection of natural resources makes a significant contribution to societal resilience. Environmental policy thus becomes a key pillar of public services and the long-term safeguarding of prosperity, health and economic stability.
