Initial situation
At ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt’s hot rolling mill, a scheduled major overhaul of a walking-beam furnace was due to take place. The furnace is a key component of the production plant and is used to heat slabs prior to the rolling process. As part of the overhaul, extensive work was carried out inside the plant and on various plant components.
Mission
As part of the refurbishment work, ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt commissioned Müller-BBM Industry Solutions to identify and assess the potential exposure of employees to hazardous substances. In the study typical activities carried out during the repair work were examined, including scale removal, work on the burner platform and the replacement of the refractory lining. The aim was to establish a sound basis for the risk assessment and the further optimisation of health and safety at work.
Measurement
The measurements of hazardous substances were carried out in accordance with the GefStoffV and TRGS 402. By conducting fixed-point and personal measurements at representative workstations, Müller-BBM Industry Solutions determined the actual levels of exposure during the repair work. The assessment was based on the AGW values set out in TRGS 900, as well as other recognised national and international limit and assessment values.
