Explosion protection zone

An explosion protection zone (or Ex zone for short) is a defined area in which an explosive atmosphere may form due to the presence of flammable substances (such as gases, vapours or dusts). These zones are classified into different categories based on the likelihood and duration of such hazardous atmospheres occurring. The aim of this classification is to implement appropriate protective measures to prevent ignition sources (e.g. the use of only specially certified equipment and systems).
