Rolling noise

Rolling noise is a major source of rail traffic noise. It is caused by the wheels rolling along the rails. Unevenness in the contact surfaces between the wheel and the rail causes both to vibrate, and this vibration is radiated in the form of airborne sound. Depending on the speed and the condition of the rails and wheels, this noise level can vary considerably.
