SIL

SIL stands for ‘Safety Integrity Level’ and is a measure of the functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable safety-related systems. The SIL classification, which is divided into four levels (SIL 1 to SIL 4), describes the probability that a safety-related system, for example an explosion protection device, will reliably perform its function when required. The higher the SIL level, the lower the probability of failure and the higher the required safety integrity.
