Water Framework Directive (WFD)

European directive governing water policy in the EU, with the aim of achieving sustainable and environmentally sound water use. Key instruments are the prohibition of deterioration and the requirement for improvement with regard to designated bodies of water (surface water bodies, groundwater bodies).
