The effects of climate change have long since reached our cities. Heatwaves, periods of drought and heavy rainfall are presenting local authorities, urban planners and businesses with new challenges. To provide our clients with the best possible support in tackling these complex challenges, we are constantly investing in the further training of our staff.
Over the past few months, our colleagues Dr Katharina Baumann and Erik Petersen have been attending the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP’s training course on ‘Climate-Resilient Urban Design’. This practice-oriented course is aimed at professionals in the fields of urban development, environmental management and public administration, and provides in-depth knowledge on the climate-resilient development of urban spaces.
Understanding climate change and developing effective measures
This training course provides comprehensive knowledge of the causes and consequences of climate change in urban environments. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of urban heat islands, energy and material flows in urban areas, and appropriate measures for adapting to changing climatic conditions.
In addition, strategies are presented to help local authorities make their cities more resilient to the effects of climate change. The focus is on topics such as urban green spaces, multifunctional open spaces and the integration of climate adaptation measures into existing planning processes.
From analysis to implementation
Another key focus of the training programme is on practical application. Among other things, participants will learn about the use of modern urban climate simulations and acquire the necessary expertise to assess climate risks and identify appropriate measures. This covers the full spectrum from scientific analysis to concrete implementation in local planning processes.
