Odour emissions from charcoal grills at local snack bars – presentation of a recent expert report

The environmental department of the city of Gelsenkirchen reported back in August that the three snack bars on Essener Straße, Bottroper Straße and Industriestraße exceed the emission limits for odour specified in the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft). Now, expert Frank Müller from our Gelsenkirchen branch presented the procedure for determining odour pollution in more detail.

The emission measurements were carried out during ignition as well as at partial and full load. Müller emphasised that only odour perception, and not other air pollutants, was part of the investigation. In addition to the emission data determined, a 3D model of the surrounding buildings was used in the odour propagation calculation.

To reduce odours, Müller suggested shortening the operating hours of charcoal grills without restricting the opening hours of the businesses. He also recommended regular and thorough cleaning of the systems, as deposits in the exhaust air system can also cause odours.
