As part of the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) is an active member of several HELCOM, OSPAR and EU TG Noise committees that deal with the topic of underwater noise under Descriptor 11. In 2022, binding threshold values for assessing the Good Environmental Status (GES) were agreed upon at EU level. Suitable reduction measures for impulse noise and continuous noise were to be identified. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) also adopted the guidelines for reducing ship-based underwater noise in 2023 (MEPC.1/ Circ.906). As part of the Method II R&D project BSH - Current Projects, the BSH commissioned Müller-BBM Industry Solutions GmbH to compile and evaluate measures to reduce ship-based continuous noise, in addition to other aspects. This contribution represents the new chapter of the "OSPAR Inventory of Mitigation Measures of Underwater Noise" and was presented in the form of a poster at the Marine Environment Symposium 2024 BSH - Press. The work was carried out at our Hamburg branch by our colleagues in the Ship and Offshore Acoustics department.
