Critical load

The “critical load” is a concept used in environmental science to determine the maximum amount of a pollutant that a particular ecosystem can absorb without suffering harmful effects. It is an important indicator of the resilience of natural systems and is used to set limits on pollutant emissions and to formulate environmental targets. Critical loads are particularly well known for nitrogen deposition and acid deposition.
