Insulation (piping)

A structure typically comprising several layers of material applied to a pipe with the aim of improving its thermal and/or acoustic properties. Purely thermal insulation usually consists of an insulating material (e.g. mineral wool) and a covering layer (steel or aluminium sheet). Acoustically effective assemblies generally include an additional sound-absorbing layer, which is usually applied directly to the metal casing. Furthermore, any spacers required must be of a flexible design. Examples of designs and a specification of acoustic performance (classes A to D) are provided in ISO 15665.
