Deposition of heavy metals

Heavy metals are released into the atmosphere⁠ through, among other things, the combustion of fossil fuels, waste incineration and industrial processes, such as metal processing. They enter ecosystems via deposition. Under certain conditions, they can accumulate over long periods in soils, plants, aquatic systems and animal organisms, and can also affect humans via certain food chains.
